Tips for a 1 Day visit to Pena Palace!

Have you ever imagined living in an enchanted castle, surrounded by stunning landscapes and love stories? In the 12th century, such a dream began to take shape in Serra de Sintra, with the construction of a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena.

Centuries later, in the 19th century, the romantic King Fernando II, passionate about the arts and the beauty of nature, decided to transform the ruins of this monastery into a palace worthy of a fairy tale. With his fertile imagination and a touch of magic, he created a unique place, where medieval architecture mixes with oriental elements, resulting in a true dream palace.

Imagine the king, a cultured man passionate about music and art, walking through the flower gardens of the palace, inspired by the beauty of the mountains and local history. He dreamed of creating a refuge for the royal family, with grand splendor also honoring the history of this nation, of which he was now also part.

And so, Palácio da Pena was born, a true architectural treasure, where every corner tells a story. Its pointed towers, lush gardens and richly decorated interiors invite visitors to embark on a journey through time and fall in love with the history of this magical place.

The construction of the palace, which began in 1838, was an ambitious and innovative project. D. Fernando II, with his artistic vision and passion for architecture, chose an eclectic style, mixing neo-Gothic, neo-Manueline and neo-Moorish elements. Every detail of the palace was carefully thought out, from the colorful stained glass windows to the lush gardens.

Years later, after the death of Queen D. Maria II, followed by D. Fernando II second marriage with Countess d’Edla. Consequently some changes wore introduced in the palace with her romantic and minimalist spirit, contributed to the creation of a magical and inspiring environment. She and D. Fernando often took refuge in the Challet named after her, Challet da Condessa d’Edla.

The eclectic mix of styles is one of the most striking features of Palácio da Pena. This fusion of different architectural elements gives the palace a unique and singular character.
